The Difference Between Full And Partial Dentures

Losing several of your natural teeth means poor oral health and negative impacts on your smile and facial structure. In order to restore smiles with lost teeth in Gary, IN, we may suggest a denture. We have two different options available, full and partial. What’s the difference, and when should you see the dentist to discuss the benefits of a custom prosthetic?

The Causes of Tooth Loss

What causes a person to lose a large number of their natural teeth? Injury and poor oral health could mean teeth become decayed and infected. These teeth could become lost, leaving gaps in your smile and causing the body to suspend the flow of key nutrients to the jawbone, leading to further tooth loss. However, the most common factor behind missing teeth is periodontitis. The advanced stage of gum disease, periodontitis, actually dissolves the tissues that connect you teeth and jaw. For adults, this is the leading cause of tooth loss.

The Partial Option

Sometimes a patient may be missing multiple teeth, but not enough to warrant a full prosthetic. A partial contains a base made from acrylic, designed to look like natural gum tissue. There will be new teeth, created using lifelike materials, such as ceramic. Metal clasps will attach to the natural teeth and anchor your new ones firmly in place, securing the prosthetic. They fill the gaps to prevent misalignment and jaw joint strain, offering a full and healthy smile.

Creating a Full Denture

Like the partial, there will be a base that looks like natural gum tissue. However, there will be a full row of new teeth and the prosthetic will be held in place with suction. We will custom-make your denture to ensure a natural appearance and comfortable fit, offering you a full and stable smile. You will be able to eat many of your favorite foods again and speak clearly.

Implant Supported

Removable dentures tend to last between 5 and 10 years, as they need replacement once the jaws change shape. However, if we secure them with dental implants, they can last much longer. Made from biocompatible titanium, we insert dental implants into the jawbone. They act as new tooth roots, preserving the jawbone structure and enabling the denture we attach to them to last much longer.
