Do Your Kids Need Fluoride Treatments?

You know that brushing and flossing are important for keeping little smiles healthy. But what if your child still has a high likelihood of developing a cavity? For children in Gary, IN, with increased chances of developing tooth decay, we may recommend fluoride treatments. How does a fluoride treatment prevent cavities, and what does the procedure involve?

Cavities and Kids

Kids love sugar, and unfortunately, large amounts of it can be found in their favorite snacks and drinks, such as candy, chocolate, snack cakes, soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, and even fruit juice! Sometimes supposedly healthy snacks, such as dried fruit, can be a source of sugar. Bacteria will break down the sugar particles stuck between the teeth, a process that causes an increase in oral acidity and coats the teeth in plaque. Over time, plaque will cause enamel erosion and gum inflammation, leading to a greater risk of tooth decay and gingivitis. Kids with tooth decay may experience tooth sensitivity and toothaches, and eventually, an infection. The premature loss of a tooth due to infection could impact the alignment of the smile as your little one grows, and may require orthodontics to fix in the future.

Fluoride Treatments

Do you know why fluoride is in our drinking water? A naturally occurring mineral, fluoride has been shown to strengthen the outer layers of tooth enamel, and since being added to our water, this mineral has lowered rates of tooth decay across the board. For added protection, we may apply a special fluoride varnish to the teeth during a checkup and cleaning visit. This helps strengthen your child’s natural defenses against the onset of tooth decay, and only takes minutes to apply. We can offer the varnish as part of your little one’s routine six month visits.

Dental Sealants and Cleanings

In addition, our team also has dental sealants, a special acrylic coating we place over the rear teeth, which are often difficult for kids to brush and floss thoroughly. The sealant prevents food from becoming stuck between these teeth and lowers the risk of tooth decay. We can also clean the teeth every six months to remove plaque buildup. If you have any questions about our preventive treatments, or about keeping little smiles free of tooth decay, then contact our team to schedule a consultation. We’d love to work with you and your children to help you all enjoy optimal oral health!
