Protect Your Smile Over Thanksgiving

Many of our Gary, IN, patients will be hitting the road, visiting friends and family over Thanksgiving. They will also be enjoying a wonderful meal. However, since many of our Thanksgiving favorites tend to contain ingredients that lead to cavities, we want to offer a few tips for protecting your smile!

Be Sure Your Brush and Floss

Every day, you should be brushing your teeth when you wake and again before going to bed. Each time should take no less than two minutes, and we suggest using a toothpaste that contains fluoride. We also recommend flossing before bed and preferably, after every meal. When you brush and floss, you limit how much plaque can form on your teeth by removing stray food particles.

Watch Out For Certain Foods and Drinks

Certain foods and drinks contain sugars and starches that bacteria love to break down, a process that leads to tooth decay in many cases. Be sure you enjoy pies, cakes, and cookies in moderation. Instead of drinking soda, try water. A glass of water will help remove harmful food particles as you enjoy your meal. We also suggest cutting back on starchy foods, such as mashed potatoes, biscuits, cornbread, and adding more fresh fruit and vegetables.

Have Your Teeth Cleaned

Following the holiday celebration, why not schedule a dental cleaning? A cleaning allows us to remove the plaque from your teeth, reducing your risk of not only tooth decay, but gum disease as well. You also have a chance to talk to your dentist about your oral health and to also use your 2018 dental insurance benefits before they expire in December. If you have any questions, or if you’re ready to schedule a post-holiday visit, then contact our team today.
