If you feel that there is something a bit “off” about the appearance of your teeth, but you can’t quite put your finger on what it is, it may not be your teeth at all. Sometimes a person’s gums cover an unusually large portion of their teeth. While there is nothing inherently wrong with that, the excess gum tissue does make the teeth appear unusually small and stumpy. Gum contouring is a cosmetic dentistry procedure in which Miller Beach cosmetic dentist, Dr. Nicholas Cain, removes the excess tissue and gently reshapes the gum line so that a larger section of the teeth are visible. Often gum contouring is performed in conjunction with tooth contouring.
What to Expect
If you are contemplating gum contouring, Dr. Cain will work with you to determine exactly how much tissue should be removed. He may take a photo of your teeth and draw in his vision for how the new gum line will look. Once you’ve both agreed on a plan of action, he will numb your gums and probably prescribe oral or nitrous oxide dental sedation so you will be comfortable during the procedure.
Dr. Cain will use a state-of-the-art soft-tissue laser to remove the extra gum tissue. The laser allows him to work quickly and achieve very accurate results. Energy from the highly targeted soft-tissue laser beams essentially vaporizes the excess gum tissue, and cauterizes the blood vessels to prevent bleeding and swelling.
After the procedure, you will see immediate improvements in the appearance of your smile. You may experience some discomfort as the gums heal, for about 24-48 hours. Taking over-the-counter pain relievers and being careful not to brush or irritate the gums can help.
