What Are Dentures & Do You Need Dentures?

You don’t have to lose your smile because you’ve lost your teeth. You can restore your confidence and restore the function of your teeth by replacing lost teeth with dental prosthetics like dentures. What are dentures and do you need dentures? Dentures are a form of dental prosthetics, artificial teeth that replace your missing teeth to restore the function and appearance of your teeth. Whether you are missing all your teeth, all your top or all your bottom teeth, or missing some teeth, a form of dentures could be the solution to restore your smile.

Who Needs Dentures?

It’s a misconception that only elderly patients require dentures. Anyone with significant tooth loss may find that dentures are the right solution for their oral health. Teeth loss can be the result of poor dental hygiene, trauma, or illness, in addition to aging. Dentures are an accessible and affordable solution to replace teeth, especially if you have lost all your teeth or have a significant amount of missing teeth.

Full Dentures

Patients are often most familiar with full dentures. Full dentures are a full set of artificial teeth attached to a soft, flexible base. Full dentures are utilized for patients who have lost all of their teeth or  have lost all teeth on the top arch or all teeth on the bottom arch of their mouth. Full dentures are removable. They are secured in the mouth with suction or specialty denture adhesive. While the feeling of wearing full dentures can take some getting used to, most patients find that the discomfort subsides with time and eventually full dentures begin to feel natural or unnoticeable.

Partial Dentures

If you have some remaining natural teeth, partial dentures may be the preferable solution. Like dental  bridges, partial dentures use the remaining natural teeth for support. Crowns are placed on natural teeth and then the removable clasps on your partial dentures snap into these crowns.
