Do you feel nervous about visiting the dentist? If so, then you’re not alone. In fact, various studies show that anywhere between 8% and 15% of people in the United States suffer from one form of dental anxiety. In today’s blog, your Northwest, IN, dentist will explain how we use dental sedation to ensure you feel calm and comfortable when you see our team.
Anxiety and Poor Oral Health
When people suffer from dental anxiety, whether due to lack of experience visiting a dentist, or as a result of a bad experience, this means they will likely avoid even routine appointments of checkups and cleanings. Without regular care to control plaque buildup and address common issues that arise, such as gingivitis and cavities, the risk of everything from infection to tooth loss increases. We don’t want your fears to prevent you from enjoying optimal oral health. We would be happy to talk with you about your anxieties, and walk you through what to expect from the diagnostic and treatment process. In addition, we of course offer cleaning solutions with dental sedation.
Two Unique Sedation Options
The most common sedation option is nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas. The patient wears a mask over the nose and mouth and breathes in the gas, which helps them enter a relaxed and often euphoric state. This option is safe for children and adults alike, and the effects will wear off as soon as the procedure ends. In fact, this option is so mild you remain conscious throughout the procedure. You will be able to respond to the dentist, but won’t remember the experience. You can even drive yourself home or return to work or school!
For a deeper state of relaxation, especially for those with more severe anxiety or undergoing oral surgery, we may suggest oral sedation. This option is taken in a pill or liquid form prior to treatment. The effects take time to begin, but you enter a much deeper state of calm. The effects take time to wear off, so you will need a friend or family member to bring you home.
