Sedation Dentistry

Let’s face it … few people look forward to having a cavity filled, undergoing a root canal, having a tooth extracted, or even getting a cleaning and routine dental exam. Whether your anxiety about your dental visit is mild or extreme, rest assured that Dr. Cain uses sedation dentistry to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible while you are in the dental chair.

At Healthy Smiles, we use three sedation dentistry techniques: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and oral sedation combined with nitrous oxide. Depending on what procedures you are having done, and how nervous you are about your visit, Dr. Cain will decide which (if any) sedation method will be best for your situation.

  • Nitrous Oxide. Commonly known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is an oral analgesic. When patients inhale nitrous oxide, it calms them, and reduces anxiety and their sensation of feeling pain. The mildest form of sedation dentistry, nitrous oxide is delivered through a scented mask placed over the patient’s nose. The “woozy” effects of nitrous oxide subside quickly once the patient stops inhaling the gas.
  • Oral Sedation. When Dr. Cain prescribes oral sedation, he is prescribing pills that a patient will take before his or her procedure. Usually, the patient will be prescribed one pill to be taken the night before the visit, and a second pill to be taken shortly before their appointment. The sedative helps relieve anxiety about a dental procedure. Oral sedation often is prescribed for procedures that are time-consuming or involved — such as root canals.
  • Oral Sedation plus Nitrous Oxide. For patients who are overly fearful or anxious about their dental procedure, Dr. Cain may prescribe a combination of oral sedation and nitrous oxide. This dual approach provides maximum anxiety relief and helps patients relax.

Of course, patient safety is Dr. Cain’s number one concern. Before prescribing any course of sedation, he will review a patient’s medical records and speak to them about any concerns they may have.
