Fillings

One of the most common restorative procedures that Gary general dentist, Dr. Nicholas Cain, performs in the office is treating cavities by applying fillings to patients’ teeth. Dental fillings are a bit like Band-Aids for teeth. Dr. Cain applies fillings after he cleans the “wound” (the decayed area of the tooth). Once they are firmly in place, they seal out germs (decay-causing materials) and protect the affected area from further damage.

Natural is Better

Healthy Smiles uses all-composite fillings and does not use amalgam (metal fillings.) Most patients prefer composite (tooth-colored) fillings over amalgam, because composite fillings can be matched to blend in with a patient’s natural tooth shade. In other words, they are cosmetically more desirable than amalgam fillings. If you have been ambivalent about visiting the dentist because you don’t want to mar your smile with metal fillings, it is time to book your next appointment at Healthy Smiles.

What to Expect

When you arrive to have one or more fillings placed, Dr. Cain will first make sure that you’ll be comfortable during the procedure by administering gentle dental sedation. To accomplish this, he’ll place a mask over your mouth and nose, and ask you to breathe through it during the procedure. The mask will deliver a steady flow of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) that will make you feel a bit light-headed and euphoric, and will keep you from becoming anxious. For patients with serious anxiety issues associated with receiving dental care, oral sedation may be a more appropriate choice.

Next he will numb the area. After he removes the decayed area of tooth, he will paint a composite resin material over that space, and then cure it with a light or a catalyst. Once the material has hardened, he will ask you to bite down on a special paper so he can see any rough edges. Once any rough edges have been smoothed away, he’ll polish your new filling and send you on your way. The effects of the nitrous oxide dissipate very quickly after you remove the mask. Your mouth likely will be tingly for awhile until the sedative wears off.
