Preventive Dentistry

An Ounce of Prevention…

We’ve all heard the saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” That adage is especially true when it comes to the health of your teeth and gums. The better care that you take of your teeth and gums over time, the less likely you will be to develop tooth decay, gingivitis, and other problems that require dental intervention.

A large percentage of Dr. Cain’s practice involves restorative work — applying crowns and fillings, performing root canals and extractions, and using orthodontics and cosmetic treatments to repair or reverse problems. After all, even the most dedicated brushers and flossers often eventually will require dental intervention. Practicing prevention does not mean that you will never develop dental problems, but it certainly is an effective way to delay problems and minimize their severity.

Dr. Cain believes that it is far better to prevent problems before they occur, whenever possible, and most patients tend to agree. Regardless of how old we are, we all long to receive a clean bill of health after a dental checkup.

At Healthy Smiles, we’ll encourage your preventive care through regular

But, prevention really begins at home with a regular and thorough oral-hygiene routine. Especially with his youngest patients, Dr. Cain never misses an opportunity to instruct them on proper brushing and flossing techniques and to explain why healthy teeth and gums are so important to oral function, quality of life, and self esteem. Once you grow up, you’ve only got one set of natural teeth — it only makes sense to take good care of them!
