Teeth Whitening

Far and away, the most popular cosmetic dental procedure in the United States is professional teeth whitening. Depending on the method you opt for, you can see your stained and discolored teeth restored to a dazzling shade of white in record time. Teeth whitening is fast, effective, and affordable. No longer reserved for the wealthy and elite, people of all ages and walks of life are experiencing the transformative power of turning back the hands of time (on their teeth, anyway!).

In-office vs. In-home Whitening

In-office whitening treatments (including deep bleaching and laser whitening, which brightens by using light) provide the fastest and most noticeable results. When you come in for a whitening treatment with your Gary cosmetic dentist, Dr. Cain will show you examples of various shades of white, and you can choose precisely which shade will best complement your features and look most natural.

The primary benefit of home whitening over in-office whitening systems is its convenience. The home system consists of mouth trays into which you squirt a specialized peroxide gel solution. The solution gently whitens teeth while you wear the trays. Home systems are also great for performing occasional touch-ups a few months after an office whitening session.

Is Teeth Whitening Right for You?

While most people will experience great results after undergoing a whitening treatment, in some cases the process will not be effective. In-office and at-home whitening treatments work only on extrinsic stains. These are stains caused by such external factors as red wine, coffee, tea, chocolate, and smoking. They are not effective on intrinsic stains, which are caused by such internal factors as taking certain medications or heredity. Intrinsic stains are best masked by porcelain veneers or dental bonding. Whitening systems are effective only on natural teeth, and will not whiten dental fillings, implants, crowns, or other dental work.
